Are we weird enough?

So another HowWeird street festival went by and it had all kinds of good things except for one thing - Industrial / EBM / PowerNoize / BreakCore / Goth sound system. I really dont understand why. There was a fair number of industrial people in the crowd, and nobody got looked down upon for wearing just black. There would have been more if we had our own stage to bang our heads by.
Is it pointless to spin our music against the sunlight? Well, sunlight does not help but its not a showstopper.
Is asphalt too tough to stomp on with platform boots? Yeah, its tougher than our customary hardwood, but it only takes a dozen to stomp the hell out of it ;)
Is HowWeird's theme of peace and prosperity too far from our ways of expression? Last time I checked our displays of militarism and totalitarianism were meant to denounce it and not to celebrate it.
I dont mean to stand anyone up, just curious why it went without a sound system of ours? Promoters, DJs, please speak up :)

P.S. The only reason I posted this topic in DG tribe and not in Meat or DM or 5lowershop or SPAZ is because DG has highest traffic. I dont think that putting out sound system at place like HowWeird should be done by DG alone.

Auditions- Aberrant Behavior- Saturday June 7th @ Mamma Buzz in Oakland arts district

I am having auditions for my new movie "Aberrant Behavior" Saturday June Seventh at Mamma Buzz Cafe in downtown Oaklands Art District 2318 Telegraph Ave from 4-6PM. I have already casted some of the roles and have people working on it, I just have not cast all of them yet and of course the female lead.

There will be some paid roles (of course the leads) but this is a low budget (around 25-35,000 or so) affair so it won't be a whole lot. Just to warn you.

Aberrant Behavior, is basically a love story about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. They have a very co-dependent relationship and with there disorders too , they literally destroy each other.

There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

THERE WILL BE SOME SEXUALITY AND NUDITY FOR THE TWO LEADS, AS WELL AS MISTY AND FOGGY TO A LESSER DEGREE. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR THOSE ROLES, IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. THANK YOU.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

LEADS:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin. Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice.He falls in love with Aiko. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUALS SITUATIONS REQUIRED-CAST

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered. She falls in love with Victor. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS REQUIRED.

SUPPORTING LEADS:
Pedida Muertos- (20's -40's)-Mexican- Victor's nearly catatonic - mute drug addict mother, who is usually messing around with strange men, and drugged up. Mostly abuses Victor through neglect. Mostly shown in flashbacks, but one scene in present as well. Young actress aged to look older in present, or vice versa.

Misty & Foggy (20's) two girls that Victor and Chad meet at the bar, who are wasted, and act and look like twins. Very ditzy, drunk, corporate, normal. They take Victor and Chad back to there place. Drunken debauchery ensues.

Spic 'N' Span (20's -40's)- One of the horrible mascots for the advertising firm Victor works for, "Spic n Span's Whiten it up" Cleaning product. They play racist cliched versions of mexican house workers. Think Samo. It's meant to be horrible, and it of course offends Victor.

Aiko's Father-
A militant cold hearted man who sexually abuses aiko. Must be bilingual Japanese & English

Aiko's Mother-
Always screaming at Aikos father. Bi-lingual fluent in German & English

VARIOUS:
Hipster's (18-30) Some with speaking roles. A house party Victor crashes.

Office workers (20's -on) Some with speaking roles.

Various small roles for the horrible commercials and promo's from the firm Victor briefly works for

Doomsday

After reading the reviews for this film I almost didn't want to see it, but I finally got around to it tonight. In the movie as soon as they started getting to the good stuff I immediately wondered what people in death guild think about this. There is a scene involving fire spinning, mad max costumes combined with tartans, great machines covered in spikes and blades, and mayhem. I'd love to see something like that scene recreated at this year's burn, minus the cannibalism.

Somehow this movie also managed to work in a rather authentic medieval city with somewhat apocalyptic knights on horseback. And that part actually made some sense. Sure the movie has some plot holes and relies on some suspension of disbelief, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Is anyone else inspired by it to create some new costumes and works?

Parking?

Has anyone had any problems with parking in the Wells Fargo lot on Mondays? I've always parked there without a problem. This past Wednesday, I received a polite note telling me about the parking charge and an envelope in which to put $15 (I didn't, but I did appreciate the warning note).

Since I've only ever had a problem on the Wednesday and not on the Monday, and it's been quite a while since I've gone to DG, is there some new parking enforcement going on?

Monday, March 17th sees the return of the Japanese Synth-Goth band, the ROYAL DEAD
and special guests nO thiNg (industrial middleeastern dance music) at
the BOX, at the Blue Lagoon on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz.

The ROYAL DEAD are in the middle of their western states tour and have a new album out.
The last time they came saw the largest turnout in two years at the BOX.

They have a mixture of J-pop, synth goth, classical music and are very theatrical..........a lot of fun!!!!

Rick Walker's industrial middleeastern project, nO thiNg opens in a duet collaboration with
John Connel (guitar and keyboards). Rick will play distorto bass, keyboards, drums, industrial
metal percussion, strumstick, trumpet and traditional middleastern percussion.

They will be playing minimalistic, heavy beat driven tradiditional middleastern music.

You may know Leyla from Twilight Zone, House of Usher, Roderick's Chamber, Assimilate, A Winter Gone By, Shrine of Lilith, Catacombs, Death Guild, Meat, or Strangelove.

For 12 years, Leyla has lived in the same apartment in Western Addition. 5 years ago, she accepted Jamahl as her roommate, and 2 years ago Jamahl allowed his mother and brother to move in to his bedroom. They lived there RENT FREE, and quickly destroyed the apartment and any semblance of peace. The mother, a particularly nasty woman, would turn her speakers towards Leyla's wall and crank music, lock herself in the bathroom for hours if she knew Leyla had to go to work, and even PEED ON HER TOOTHBRUSH. As master tenant, Leyla tried to have them evicted, but they claimed squatter's rights and wouldn't budge.

In November, Leyla was arrested for "Threat Crime" for saying she wanted to kill her rooommate's mother. She spent 2 weeks in jail before friends could bail her out. Leyla gave up her rent-controlled apartment, and friends moved all of her belongings into storage. She has been broke and homeless ever since, and recently accepted a plea-bargain of "Attempted Threat" so she can finally move on. She'll soon leave for the Mid-West to spend time with her ailing father (who is fighting cancer for the 3rd time).

We hope to raise $$$ for her to pay off bail debt and cover some travel expenses. This will also be the last chance for many of us to wish her well.

'm making a film, that will be somewhat explicit in parts. Also, there will be imagery that needs nudity.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

I need before I even start:
Prostethetics/Makeup- There are many parts of my movie that need gore, ghoulish makeup or creating body casts for dreamlike effect (like a scene where they fall onto the ground and break like porcelain blood-paint spraying out of them creating a heart) but most importantly I need someone who can help make someone look anorexic, eye sockets reccessed , hips sticking out, ribs sticking out, shoulder blades, etc. I can't start without this because it's one of the main characters.

Boom-I have someone lined up for operating boom/mixing sound, but I'm not sure he'll always be available. I need someone who has at least some experience in this to help. I have equipment but having (better?) equipment would be great.

Props- It would be great to have someone who can assist in creating edible (or non toxic) chemicals, substances, materials for the main characters to ingest. It would also free me up to think about other things.

Lighting/ Art Department/ Set Design/Decoration/Locations- I need someone who can do a lot without a lot who can work with unusual materials. Who isn't too expensive or I won't be able to afford you. Also may be able to transform other locations into desired location.Things needed for instance underground bomb shelter turned into run down sorta apartment. Abandoned buildings. Offices. Fashion Show. A sewer, where the characters live in and eat off of trash.

Set Decorators/Builders:
Though the majority of the movie will be in real locations. There will be a few sets built, and sets that will be decorated to fit the movie. I am looking for people who have experience building sets (theater experience would be great) on a low budget. Resourcefullness in materials is needed (Meaning you can do a lot with not a lot). Building flats, painting, decorating.

Prosthetics/ Make-Up: Though this is not a gore horror movie. There is quite a few instances of gore. People who have experience in mold making, prostethics, sculpture. etc. would be very helpfull. Also people good at making people looking sickly or malnourished through make-up needed. In addition Emma May, the severe anorexic will need added pieces to protrude her brows and jaw, her ribs, collar bones, hip bones, etc to make herself appear much thinner. Actually a lot of make up needs from simple to complex through out the movie.

Vfx-Compositors- Though this will not be a special effects epic, there will be things needed. Good flashy two animations/composting for some of the fake commercials/promos. Possible fire and underwater animation. Some manipulation of the video -color fluctuations, shrinking an enlarging, simple morph effects, color globules to represent visual aberrations in the characters eye-sight. Some 3-D needed especailly those who are good working with modeling human figures. But mostly more simple 2-D basic 3-D stuff. I may do this myself, but send me a link to your work, and I might hire you for the movie.

Props: I will be doing much of this myself, but may need help in re-creating chemicals, materials, such as drano, soap, dirt, carpet, many other instances through-out the script, to create realistic looking edible (or at least non toxic ) substitutes for the substances they swallow.

Mechanical/Puppetry- Not needed for a lot of the movie. But there is a few scenes with Emma Mays giant snake like tape worm that slithers around. Also a scene where skull bowls start vomiting (have to read script to explain) Could do myself, just seeing if anyone else might be interested.

Lighting Designer: Though I will likely take over this role myself, and a lot of the footage will be shoot in the streets style. There will be a few locations that will be staying in for a long while in the script, and would like good, stylized lighting for maximum creepy effectiveness.

Costume: I already have a few people on board for this, but as this movie ends in a big Valentines Day Fashion Show. I am looking for people who could be commisioned for clothing for that event (and other sequences in the movie as well). Also, previously made pieces could work.

Underwater Camera- Anyone who would like to rent me an underwater camera, or who has experience filming underwater, this is needed for a few sequences.

Boom Mic/ Sound Mixer- I already have someone onboard for this, but never hurts to have a second position, or a backup

Pyro/ Fire Safety/Explosion - This really isn't needed for a lot of the movie. But there is one scenes where a whole room catches on fire (with possible stuntman that catches on fire, I made do this in special effects). There is another scenes where a home-made bomb blows a crack into a wall and makes it crumble. I want these scenes to come off effective and safe.

Security- Not throughout the whole movie, but there will be scenes where I will be filming in potentially dangerous locations, and a climax that will need crowd control

Legal/ Locations- I will probably do this myself, but if anyone has experience in finding or knowing of great locations, or securing permits for locations. I might be interested in working with you.

Production Assistants/Co-Ordinaters (I am sure you know what this means)

Music- I have most of the music worked out. But a band fell out that I really felt I needed for some sequences. If your music is post -rocky, slow core or has that aphex twin meets godspeed you black emperor I may be interested. The kind of bands I'm looking for: Mew, Godspeed you black emperor, Explosions in the sky, Spiritualized, 65 days of static, Sigur Ros. Also in some music Portis-Heady could work.

Infrared Hot-tailed Biorobotic Squirrels help scientists

Coyotes, raptors, and snakes all want to eat California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi). When attacked by avian and mammalian predators, ground squirrels typically sound a vocal alarm. In the presence of snakes, however, squirrels exhibit a behavior called tail flagging, which includes "bushing up their tail fur, picking their tail off the ground and waving it from side to side," explains Aaron Rundus, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an author on a study on tail flagging published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Rundus and his colleagues examined tail flagging in response to rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus) and gopher snakes (Pituophis melanoleucus). Previous studies had shown that ground squirrels sometimes tail flag more vigorously in the dark--a curious finding given that a visual cue like tail flagging would ostensibly be less effective in the dark.

With this in mind, the researchers watched the squirrels interact with the snakes through an infrared camera, which senses heat. The researchers discovered that when confronted by a rattlesnake, California ground squirrels not only wave their tales, but heat them as well. Rundus says, "They are actually increasing their tail temperature, or increasing the amount of infrared radiation being emitted from their tail when they encounter rattlesnakes." This is the first time that researchers have seen any animal use infrared radiation as a communicative signal, Rundus says.

But ground squirrels don't heat their tails for all snakes. While the squirrels heat up for rattlesnakes, they keep their tails cool when flagging gopher snakes. The difference in signaling is likely related to the fact that rattlesnakes can sense infrared radiation, while gopher snakes cannot. Rattlesnakes are equipped with pit organs--small cavities filled with heat-sensitive nerves that allow them to sense infrared radiation.LISTEN TO RUNDUS>>(mp3) "It would appear that these squirrels are producing a signal that capitalizes on this sensory bias that the rattlesnakes possess," Rundus says.

But what does a hot tail mean to a rattlesnake? To find out, the researchers built a biorobotic California ground squirrel. The robotic ground squirrel could be programmed to heat its tail or not, giving the researchers a chance to see how the rattlesnakes changed their response to hot versus cool tails.

The experiment was contingent on fooling the rattlesnakes into believing the biorobotic squirrel was real. "We used an actual squirrel taxidermy model ...so the exterior is a real squirrel. Then we stuffed the squirrel with components in order to get the squirrel to move the way we wanted it to move," says one of the robo-squirrel's designers, Sanjay Joshi, a professor in the department of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at the University of California, Davis. The biorobotic squirrel was also stored in real squirrel-bedding so that it would smell like a real squirrel. Key to making this robot, and any robot that is designed to interact with another (living) species, is figuring out "what makes a robotic animal believable to another animal," Joshi says. In this case, the snakes were fooled by the robotic squirrel.

The biorobot was designed to react autonomously to the snake, varying its tail flagging depending on the distance of the snake from the robot. When confronted with a hot-tailed robo-squirrel, the snake backed-off. Rundus explains: "We found that rattlesnakes shift from predatory mode to more defensive behavior when they see tail flagging, but when that infrared component is included in the tail flagging that shift is even greater. They become much more defensive than when it's not included."

Why would rattlesnakes be cowed by a heated tail? Rundus says that adult ground squirrels are "pretty evenly matched adversaries to these rattlesnake and gopher snake predators." The rattlesnakes are really after squirrel pups. If an adult squirrel is tail flagging, it means the rattlesnake has been sighted. And squirrels don't stop with tail flagging: they will also kick pebbles and dirt in the snake's direction, and even take a swipe at a snake, Rundus says. Adult squirrels can afford to be fearless because they have proteins in their blood that will neutralize rattlesnake venom. Rundus says: "The tail flagging probably signals to these rattlesnakes that a) they've been discovered and b) they're going to be harassed not only by that squirrel but by other squirrels in the area, so it's probably a good decision to leave or take refuge."

anything goth/industrial happening tonight in SF? I"m driving up to perform early in the evening

I'm driving up to perform at the Luggage Store Experimental Music Series
doing a night of acoustic experimental duets with Henry Kaiser, the guitarist
and I'll be finished by about 11:00 p.m.

Is there anything going on tonight in SF that is goth, industrial, powernoise, dark electronica,
death rock or anything remotely dark in the clubs? I'll have a car and be finishing in the
Market St./SOMA area at around 11:00.

Forgive my naivite but I live down in Santa Cruz and don't know the SF scene all that well.

Any suggestions will be welcome. Come out and say hi. I'll probably have bright pink
hair.

My name is Sunny. I am a graduate student in the Sexuality Studies program at San Francisco State University. I am conducting research on polyamory. The aim of my study is to explore how individuals in queer polyamorous triads discuss love in their relationships. I am in search of individuals in queer, long-term (one year or longer), polyamorous triads to interview. Individuals must identify themselves and their relationships as queer, and the triads must be three people who are all sexually and romantically involved with one another.

Participating in this study will entail a 45-90 minute one-on-one interview at a comfortable and private location convenient for both of us to discuss your experiences and feelings of love while in a triad.

I've been going to Death Guild for years (geez... close to a decade now), and I often get asked "Where is your wife tonight? Why do we never see her here?" The answer is that because of her work schedule, going out on a Monday night is rarely possible for her. But tonight is different - tonight is her birthday, and she's agreed to come out and celebrate it at Death Guild.

A Finnish squirrel with a sweet tooth heads to a Finnish grocery shop at least twice a day to steal "Kinder Surprise" chocolate-shelled eggs.

"I named it the Kinder-squirrel, after the treats. It always goes after them, other sweets do not seem to interest it as much," the manager of the store in Jyvaskyla, central Finland, told Reuters.

The confectionary, which is intended for children, has a toy inside.

"It removes the foil carefully, eats the chocolate and leaves the store with the toy," Irene Lindroos said.

Unfortunately, the bushy-tailed thief does not clean up after itself, but leaves the wrappers behind, she added.

Squirrels have a well deserved reputation for being clever and adaptable animals. Many a home owner has seen the small rodents raiding their supposedly "squirrel-proof" bird feeders.

They get back at each other by ruining reputations, deceit (like the oil thing), etc. It's a playday in America because you can do the slag on people through the corporations, the law, and many other avenues.

We probably have only some 30 years of oil left. This has been covered up for a very long time. Oil acts as an insulator for the
very hot core of the Earth. Removing it changes fundamental properties of the planet and these guys are screwing with the

Squirrel Attacks 3 in Germany

An unusually aggressive squirrel bit three people in a German town before its last victim finished it off with a crutch, police said.

The rodent jumped through a living-room window in Passau, on the Austrian border, on Tuesday and bit its first victim. With the squirrel hanging on by its teeth, the woman ran out into the street, where she managed to shake the animal off.

The squirrel then bit a construction worker before running into a nearby garden, where it bit a 72-year-old man who eventually killed it with a crutch, police said.

The dead animal was to be tested for rabies.

Squirrel attacks two parents, student in S.J.

(05-09) 15:26 PDT SAN JOSE -- An 11-year-old student and two parents at Evergreen Elementary School got a scare this morning when a squirrel ran into the building and attacked them, drawing blood in two cases, school officials said.

All three victims were treated for bites and scratches at a local hospital, said district spokesman Will Ector, and all are undergoing rabies treatment as a precaution. They also were administered antibiotics, he said.

The attack occurred as a classroom of first-graders was preparing to go on a field trip, said Ector. Two parent chaperones were standing in the room when a squirrel ran in and then up the leg of one of the parents, he said.

"They were trying to get it off and another parent was trying to assist in getting it off," he said. "In the process, both were bitten. One was nipped on the fingertip and scratched on the arm, and the other parent was bitten on the arm."

Finally, the squirrel jumped off the mom, did a loop around the classroom, then ran out the door and jumped on an 11-year-old student walking by. She was bitten on the arm as well, Ector said.

San Jose Police spokesman Sgt. Nick Muyo said police received a call around 8:45 a.m. alerting them to the attack. The student and one of the parents were bitten hard enough to draw blood, he said.

They were taken to the hospital by ambulance after being treated by the school's health services, Ector said. The other parent drove herself to the hospital, he added.

After the attack, Ector said, the school went into a lockdown as a safety precaution. They called in an animal expert and have since set live traps around the campus.

"It's not a heavily infested area, it's not like there are squirrel everywhere," he said.

Ector acknowledged that even if a squirrel is caught, it will be hard to verify whether it's the right critter.

"Anything we catch we will turn over to the county for them to check," he said.

It's not the first aggressive squirrel the South Bay has seen lately. Since the fall, there have been problems at Mountain View's Cuesta Park, with at least four people suffering bites.

Animal control officials attributed the aggressive behavior to a preponderance of food being left around the park, which had emboldened the animals. In one case, a 4-year-old boy was bitten after a squirrel attempted to steal his muffin.

Earlier this year, officials began trapping and euthanizing the squirrels at Cuesta Park.

Blood Vessel - Rue Morgue crewing for fundraisers and Burning Man

The Blood Vessel - Rue Morgue is crewing up for our fundraisers and for Burning Man. We need lovelies for Camp Manager, LNT Mgr, press liaisons, bar tending, Blood Vessel Hotties, Pal Bearers and more.

For those unaware of the Blood Vessel - Rue Morgue, its an art project involving the Blood Vessel art car with the goal of taking hand made art coffins to Burning Man's Temple burn. People make origami cranes at the Rue Morgue camp. The cranes have the well wishes of the departed to be taken inside the coffins to be burned.

We celebrate the death as well as the life and help people release the pain they have inside. Our 25 foot coffin trailer towed by the hearse "Clarice" carries the party fun part of what we do, dance our asses off!
